The Great British Bake Off is back!
Yes we have a different cast but the overall feel and format has been maintained. Mary Berry is irreplaceable but we now have to move on. Prue Leith has stepped in and offers interesting and sympathetic analyses to counter Paul Holywoods sometimes demanding quest for perfection.
The standard was impressive for the first episode with Steven and Sophie receiving the Paul handshake for pleasing him with quality of both taste and presentation.
Steven deservedly received the baker of the week award with a stunning imitation loaf and sandwich bake for the last task. We lost Peter as someone sadly has to leave - a couple of others breathed a sigh of relief - notably Chris and Stacey who can look forward to another attempt next week.
During the judges deliberations at the end, Noel offered to leave instead of one of the contestants and staged a mock exit. As we now know, his offer was declined and Peter had to take the first despatch notice. All the best to him for the future.
Overall we think it was a promising start and we look forward to the next episode.
